A professional organization representing roughly 500 U.S. fashion designers is showing support for Planned Parenthood as government funding for the nonprofit medical provider comes under attack by conservative politicians.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America has launched a campaign titled "Fashion Stands with Planned Parenthood" during New York City's Fashion Week to "raise awareness and support for the critical health care that the organization's centers provide and the millions of Americans it serves each year," according to the organization.
"Civic responsibility is an important CFDA pillar," CFDA CEO CEO Steven Kolb said. "Defunding Planned Parenthood will impact millions of Americans. We will raise awareness and support, this fashion week and show that Fashion Stands with Planned Parenthood."
Fashion Week started Feb. 9 and continues to Feb. 16.
Planned Parenthood provides a number of family planning services to the public, including abortions. The group receives roughly $500 million a year in government funding, most of it from Medicaid reimbursements, according to NPR. Conservatives have sought to end government funding for the nonprofit and looked poised to do so now that Republicans control both Congress and the White House.
CFDA will contribute $5 to Planned Parenthood for every social media share of a picture of a button pin with the campaign logo and the hashtag #IStandwithPP. More than 40 fashion designers and brands are participating in the campaign. http://bit.ly/2l0v3vS
